MUSKEGON COUNTY, MICHIGAN
CLASS TITLE CHIEF ATTORNEY REFEREE
SALARY RANGE: $65,748.80 - $83,595.20
DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS:

The Chief Attorney Referee conducts juvenile delinquency matters, neglect & abuse matters, and domestic matters. The Chief Attorney Referee is responsible for ensuring that pertinent information is distributed to the Muskegon County Family Court Attorney Referees and relevant staff. The Chief Attorney Referee provides input regarding proposed legislation and court rules on administrative practices. The Chief Attorney Referee is under the general direction of the Circuit Court Administrator.

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING:

A. Required Experience and Training
A Juris Doctor degree, from a regionally accredited law school;
A member in good standing in the Michigan Bar Association;
Experience and/or coursework in juvenile delinquency proceedings, neglect and abuse proceedings and/or domestic matters;
Some supervisory experience in either the public or private sector is preferable.

B. Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Considerable knowledge of family law, judicial procedures and rules of evidence;
Ability to conduct juvenile delinquency matters, neglect & abuse matters, and domestic matters;
Ability to review domestic orders regarding mandatory provisions and compliance with the Michigan child support formula;
Ability to analyze legal documents; appraise and organize facts, evidence and precedents and to present such material orally and in writing in a clear and logical form;
Familiarity with confidential information protection practices;
Ability to work effectively with court officials, administrators, attorneys, the general public and other employees in a team setting;
Ability to conduct legal research into issues involving federal, state, and local law, procedure and policy and issues memorandums to appropriate parties regarding results;
Ability to serve as a liaison in responding to a variety of questions and concerns from attorneys and other professionals, social service agency personnel, law enforcement, school personnel, juveniles, parents, relatives and others regarding court policy and procedures and related topics;
Ability to attend management, staff, and judicial meetings, when needed, and meet with social service agencies, other governmental units, and public service organizations;
Attend in-service training and related conferences;
Ability to organize and/or participate in training for court personnel, attorneys, and agency personnel regarding topics related to juvenile delinquency matters, neglect & abuse matters, and domestic matters;
Periodic review of new legislation, case law, policy and research/studies relating to juvenile delinquency matters, neglect & abuse matters, and domestic matters and court procedure and notification of appropriate individuals of significant changes.
Ability to assist in conducting the initial screening process regarding recommendations for the level of services to be provided to delinquent youth, which includes reviewing police reports.

PHYSICAL ACTIVITIES/ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS

An employee in this class performs generally sedentary or light physical work activities requiring the occasional lifting of objects weighing up to thirty-five (35) pounds. A Chief Attorney Referee generally works in the Family Court office.

LEGAL SECRETARY

A busy West Michigan Law Firm is currently recruiting for an experienced Legal Secretary to undertake a variety of administrative and clerical tasks. You will work under the supervision of an attorney and have the following responsibilities:

RESPONSIBILITIES:
 
Provide administrative support to one or more attorneys.
Responsible for document preparation, editing, file maintenance and client billing.
Effectively communicate with clients, court personnel, witnesses and other professionals in person or over the phone.
Handle administrative confidential firm and/or client information.
Maintain and manage the firm’s calendaring system and schedule appointments and court appearances of attorneys.
File documents in both state and federal courts and process the mail.
Other duties as may be assigned to fully meet the requirements of the position.
 
The ideal candidate will possess the following experience and qualifications:

EXPERIENCE AND QUALIFICATIONS
 
A  minimum of 2 years of Legal Secretary experience and be proficient in legal secretarial tasks including, but not limited to, document preparation, filing, time entry, customer service, and calendar maintenance.
Possess strong interpersonal and communication skills.
Be proficient in MS Word, Outlook, Excel, Microsoft and Quickbooks.
Must exhibit strong typing skills and have the ability to learn and quickly become proficient in new computer software programs.
Possess excellent written and oral communication and organizational skills.
Ability to work in a high volume, fast-paced environment.
