When Stearns Creek Park was dedicated on June 27, it represented the end of one way of life on the land and the beginning of protection of its ecological value for the future. With over 6,000 feet of frontage along Ottawa County’s Stearns Creek, the Ottawa  County Parks will be able to preserve nearly 27 acres of wetland, and a very diverse set of species.

Part of the property was the former Vollmer Family Farm. (Owner Lou Vollmer was the grandfather of photographer Jeanne.) As over 100 people at the dedication listened, Lou Vollmer’s daughter Ruth told of their life on the farm, which he never left for more than a day.

Speakers included County Administrator Al Vanderberg.
