Festival of Trees makes even Scrooges and Grinches smile

By Cynthia Price

It is hard to imagine anyone visiting the Muskegon Museum of Art (MMA) Festival of Trees and not getting into the holiday spirit.

There are days for seniors, social times (including cocktails) for all adults, teddy bears and Santa visits for the children, and enough beauty and creativity to inspire everyone.

The centerpieces of the fund-raising fest are trees, wreaths, and other Christmas-y items decorated by local artisans. There is an admission fee, the decorative items are auctioned off, and sponsors – this year’s presenting underwriter was  Arconic Whitehall Operations, co-sponsored by Nichols – which all goes to support the world-class arts center that is the MMA.

Through it all, hundreds of volunteers – many of whom are unseen – plan, prepare, and host it, and clean up afterwards.

Members of the Festival of Trees Committee are: Helen Allshouse, Sue Baglien, Sondra Burnham, Sarah Hermanson, Shawn Lazarock, Caroline Mayberry, Cindi Mitchell, Deb Moon, Skeeter Parkhouse, Larry Schillaci, Sherri Schuitema-Vanderweir, Regina Sjoberg, Sherri  Richard VanderPutte-McPherson, and the MMA staff.
