Summer Legal Institute welcomes students

Twenty-four metropolitan Detroit high school students attended the first-ever, week-long Just the Beginning Foundation Summer Legal Institute at the Theodore Levin U.S. Courthouse in Detroit.

The Chicago-based foundation now offers this program in eight major metropolitan locations around the country, seeking to diversify the legal profession by opening the eyes of students of color to the possibility that law might be an achievable career goal for them.

On Tuesday, July 12, the students heard addresses from U.S. District Court Judges Julian Abele Cook Jr., Marianne O. Battani, Victoria A. Roberts, Denise Page Hood, and Sean F. Cox.

The students attend 16 different high schools including Cass Tech, Cranbrook, Denby, Farmington, Henry Ford Academy, International Academy, Lincoln, Melvindale, Pershing, Pontiac, Renaissance, Southwestern, Summit Academy, Trotwood Madison, Wayne Memorial, and University Academy.
