Foley & Lardner LLP is pleased to announce that Erin L. Toomey has been named a Michigan Lawyers Weekly 2011 "Up & Coming Lawyer." Toomey is senior counsel in the firm's Detroit office. Her clients, ranging from Fortune 500 corporations to small businesses, count on her for help navigating all aspects of government procurement. Toomey has successfully litigated bid protests and pursued claims in addition to having collaboratively achieved a federal jury trial acquittal in a health care fraud criminal case. She holds multiple leadership roles in the firm including serving on the associates' committee and as a member of the pro bono committee for the Detroit office. As part of her commitment to pro bono service, she initiated and coordinates the office's pro bono involvement with the local Michigan Innocence Clinic, a University of Michigan program that aims to overturn wrongful convictions. * * * Jennifer Zbytowski Belveal, a partner in the Litigation Department at Honigman, Miller, Schwartz, and Cohn LLP, has been elected to the Board of Directors of the Canton Community Foundation, which assists donors in creating permanent funds to fulfill common interests that improve the quality of life in the Canton community and southeastern Michigan. She is also a newly elected member of the Board of Giving Hope Women's Giving Circle, a fund affiliated with the Foundation that supports local women and families. Belveal focuses her law practice on both white collar criminal defense and complex commercial litigation involving all aspects of business, real estate, health care and environmental laws. At Honigman, Belveal serves as associate general counsel, chair of the firm's Pro Bono Committee, co-chair of its White Collar Criminal Defense and Investigations Practice Group, and chair of the Retention Subcommittee of its Committee on Women Attorney Initiatives. Belveal is a member of the Pro Bono Initiative of the Committee on Justice Initiatives for the State Bar of Michigan and serves on the Executive Committee of the Oakland County Bar Association Inns of Court. In addition, she is a member of the American Bar Association's Woman Advocate Committee, the Women Lawyers Alliance and Inforum. Belveal earned her law degree from the University of Michigan Law School and her B.A. from Michigan State University's Honors College. * * * Jaffe, Raitt, Heuer, & Weiss PC and its partner Jennifer Oertel were recently recognized by Community Legal Resources (CLR) of Detroit for their dedication to the organization and to the community. Jaffe Raitt was the first law firm to serve as CLR's community partner, acting as outside general counsel to CLR on a pro bono basis. CLR created its community partner program to offer pro bono corporate counsel arrangements to select community-based non-profit clients. Each partnership lasts over the course of one year with the participating law firm devoting a team of attorneys tasked with addressing the organization's business legal needs. Through the community partner program, Oertel helped CLR negotiate an agreement that allowed the non-profit organization to make important contributions to the City of Detroit's public planning efforts. She currently serves as leader of the Firm's Tax-Exempt Organizations Practice, specializing in non-profit and for-profit groups. In addition, Derek D. McLeod has joined Jaffe Raitt as an associate in the firm's Litigation Practice Group, specializing in all aspects of commercial, franchise, employment, and securities litigation matters. Jaffe CEO Richard Zussman made the announcement. Most recently McLeod served as partner with Cohen, Lerner, Rabinovitz, & Witus PC. Earlier he spent six years with Hertz Schram PC. as an associate. McLeod earned his Bachelor of Arts from The Citadel, The Military College of South Carolina, and is a graduate of Northeastern University School of Law. * * * Harriet B. Rotter of Bingham Farms has been selected by her peers for inclusion in the 2012 edition of The Best Lawyers in America in the specialty of Family Law. She has also been recognized as a 2011 Super Lawyer, Michigan Super Lawyers Magazine, in the area of Family Law, in addition to being named one of the top 50 women lawyers in Michigan. Rotter has served on various boards and commissions, including the Board of Trustees at Central Michigan University and the United States Commission for the Preservation of America's Heritage Abroad and the President's Advisory Committee of the John F. Kennedy Center. She is a member of the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers and is a past-president of the Michigan Chapter. * * * Dykema Gossett PLLC is pleased to announce the addition of new associates in the firm's Bloomfield Hills and Detroit. John Rhoades joins Dykema's Business and Commercial Litigation Group and will be resident in Dykema's Detroit office. Rhoades graduated from the University of Michigan Law School. During law school, he interned for U.S. Bankruptcy Court Judge Walter Shapero, Eastern District of Michigan. Alexandra Wolfe will be resident in the firm's Detroit office. Since joining Dykema, Wolfe's practice has focused on general employment matters, including responses to administrative charges, and research, particularly with regard to the Fair Housing Act. She also recently assisted in preparing an amicus brief on behalf of one of the firm's clients. While in law school, Wolfe served on the Moot Court & Lawyering Skills Governing Board, was a managing editor for both the Ohio State Journal of Criminal Law and The Pro Bono Research Group. She also participated in the school's Law and Leadership Program. Prior to joining Dykema, Wolfe worked as a mediator in the small claims court, prosecution unit, and pre-file department. She also spent a summer as a Public Interest Fellow, working at the Legal Aid Society of Columbus. Karen Feldman's practice focuses on Intellectual Property. Feldman will be located in the firm's Bloomfield Hills office. She graduated from the University of Detroit Mercy School of Law. Prior to joining Dykema, she interned for Michigan Supreme Court Justice Diane Hathaway. Feldman also worked for a number of years as an Equipment/Process Engineer at Intel Corp. in the Chemical Mechanical Planarization (CMP) group. A former managing partner of Plunkett Cooney, Booth has been named by Best Lawyers as "Detroit Best Lawyers Personal Injury Litigation - Defendants Lawyer of the Year." John F. Mills is a partner whose law practice focuses on family law, with an emphasis on family law alternative dispute resolution and adoption law and Richard D. Rattner, is partner whose law practice focuses on real estate, land use, zoning and corporate law. * * * Wayne State University Law School congratulates Professor Stephen Calkins on his appointment as a member of the Competition Authority of Ireland and head of its Mergers Division. The Competition Authority, Ireland's chief trade regulation agency, applies Irish and European law to challenge anticompetitive cartels, mergers and abuses of dominance, and is led by a chairperson and three members. During 2012, the Competition Authority will merge with Ireland's National Consumer Agency, and Professor Calkins will have responsibility for both competition and consumer protection regulation. Calkins was general counsel of the U.S. Federal Trade Commission from 1995-97. Since January 2008, Calkins has served Wayne State University as associate vice president for academic personnel and has retained his position in the Law School, teaching on a limited basis. To accept this appointment, Calkins is taking a leave of absence from Wayne State. When his service with Ireland's Competition Authority ends, Calkins expects to return to Wayne Law to share what he has learned with students and colleagues. At the Law School, Calkins has regularly taught courses and seminars on antitrust and trade regulation, consumer law and torts. He also has taught at the University of Michigan, University of Pennsylvania and Utrecht University (The Netherlands), and served as Wayne Law's interim dean. Calkins has lectured widely throughout the U.S. and abroad, and works with a variety of domestic and foreign government officials. He has written and co-written many publications on competition and consumer law and policy and related subjects, including the fourth edition of "Antitrust Law: Policy And Practice," and the fifth edition of "Antitrust Law and Economics in a Nutshell." He co-edited "Consumer Protection Law Developments" and is a journal editor. Calkins is a member of the American Law Institute, a fellow of the American Bar Foundation, and a senior fellow of the American Antitrust Institute. He has served three three-year terms on the Council of the American Bar Association (ABA) Section of Antitrust Law and is a former member of the Council of the ABA Section of Administrative Law and Regulatory Practice. He is also a former chair of the Association of American Law Schools' Section on Antitrust and Economic Regulation. He received a B.A. from Yale University and a law degree from Harvard Law School.
