Military center draws 2,500 since Nov. opening

ROMULUS (AP) -- Creators of a lounge for traveling military travelers at Detroit Metropolitan Airport says the facility has served at least 2,500 service members and their relatives since opening last month. The site is called the Freedom Center and is next to Gate A43 in the McNamara Terminal. It opened on Nov. 11, Veterans Day. The 1,100-square-foot facility is open to veterans, as well as to military personnel and their families. Normal hours are 6 a.m. to 9 p.m., with extended hours during periods of heavy military travel. The center has hot and cold drinks, free Wi-Fi and other personal assistance. It operates with help from corporate donations, as well as from the Wayne County Airport Authority. ---------------- Online: http://www.MIfreedomcenter.org. Published: Mon, Jan 16, 2012
