Northern ice races get green light by judge

ESCANABA TOWNSHIP, Mich. (AP) -- A judge in the Upper Peninsula has refused to halt races on an ice track in Escanaba Township, saying the noise from all-terrain vehicles and motorcycles is within legal limits. Escanaba Township officials say the owners never filed a request for a permit. But the owners tell WLUC-TV they were told they didn't need one. Delta County Judge Stephen Davis declined to stop the weekend races Wednesday, but his ruling won't end the litigation. The races are run by the Wells Lions Club and are scheduled through March 17.
