Judge addresses Fortnight for Freedom event

On Wednesday, June 27, Oakland County Circuit Judge Michael Warren addressed a large group in attendance for the Fortnight for Freedom event at the National Shrine of the Little Flower Parish.  Father Tim Hogan, a former Navy Chaplain, and Neran Karmo, coordinator for the Eastern Catholic Re-evangelization Center, also addressed the audience.

Warren reviewed how the primary motive for settling the New World was seeking asylum from religious persecution and explained how the free exercise of religion was protected in American constitutional law through the efforts of James Madison and Thomas Jefferson in opposing the established church in Virginia.  Warren explained how the right to the free exercise of religion is a duty owed to our Creator that must be protected by civil society and that “perhaps the finest example of what it means to be a free person and an American is the protection in the First Amendment of the Free Exercise of Religion.”  He explained that: “It is up to every generation to maintain our liberty for ourselves and for our children.”

After the speech, Oakland County Assistant Prosecutor Justin Davis stated:  “Judge Warren’s superb speech was an inspiration to all in attendance.  He explained how precious and unique our religious liberty is and the need to be vigilant to protect it.”

Peter Bolton, chair of the Shrine Catholic Schools Unified School Board, reflected on Warren’s speech and remarked: “His speech explored the deep history of protecting religious liberty in America which is too often ignored by schools and culture.  His extraordinary speech will be long remembered and helps us understand why we need to protect our freedoms.”

Warren called upon those in attendance to renew the spirit of American by joining Patriot Week which renews America’s spirit by celebrating the First Principles, Founding Fathers and other Patriots, vital documents and speeches, and flags that make America the greatest nation in world history.

Warren and his daughter Leah co-founded Patriot Week which runs from Sept. 11 through Sept. 17, the anniversary of the signing of the Constitution.  To learn more about Patriot Week, visit www.PatriotWeek.org.
