Prayer vigil set for officer killed in West Bloomfield

WEST BLOOMFIELD TOWNSHIP (AP) — A prayer vigil is planned for a police officer who was fatally shot while responding to a 911 call in suburban Detroit this month.

The Detroit Free Press reports the vigil for Officer Patrick O’Rourke is 7:30 p.m. Friday, Sept. 28, behind St. Thomas Chaldean Church in Oakland County’s West Bloomfield Township.

The 39-year-old West Bloomfield Township officer was in a group of officers responding to a call the night of Sept. 9 about a man believed to be suicidal. Authorities said the man fired from inside a bedroom, killing O’Rourke. The gunman later was found dead in the home after a 20-hour standoff with police.

Several fundraisers also are planned for O’Rourke’s family. And West Bloomfield Township is providing a direct link for donations on its website.
