Man gets jail for driving mower while drunk

PONTIAC (AP) -- A Detroit-area man charged with driving drunk on a riding lawn mower after an arrest recorded on police video has been sentenced to 45 days in jail. Court records say 47-year-old Roy Walton was sentenced Wednesday in Oakland County Circuit Court. He earlier pleaded guilty to operating while intoxicated, his third such offense, and the jail time had been expected because of his prior record. Defense lawyer John Secrest had sought a 30-day suspended sentence. He told WWJ-AM after the hearing that the sentence seemed too harsh. Walton also got two years of probation. He has said he was a Navy veteran who served in Afghanistan and called the case "upsetting." Authorities say Walton rode the mower to a drug store March 22 in Oakland County's Bloomfield Township.
