Professionalism in Action at UDM Law

University of Detroit Mercy School of Law in partnership with the State Bar of Michigan presented its Professionalism in Action program on Monday, Aug. 19, in the Law School’s Atrium.

Among those taking part in the program were (seated, left to right) Robert Hindelang; Karen Kienbaum; Charlene Snow; Sylvia Elliott; Susan Gillooly; Agnes Hagerty; and retired Judge Wendy Baxter; along with (standing, left to right) Denise Glassmeyer; Greg Ulrich; Marjory  Basile; Ronda Tate; Oakland County 45th District Court Judge David Gubow; Mark Wisniewski; Larry Dubin; Ethan Vinson; Troy Harris; State Bar of Michigan President Bruce Courtade; B.J. Belcoure; Mary Schmitt Smith; John Mellen; Elizabeth Jolliffe; and Steve Hickey.

“As part of our orientation we have the Professionalism in Action program wherein many of our former graduates, who are now successful practicing lawyers for many years, come in and discuss with the incoming students in small groups a number of ethics problems that reflect some of the diverse ethical responsibilities that a lawyer encounters when representing clients—in owing the clients fiduciary responsibilities while still being an officer of the court and again contrasting that to even some of the lawyer’s own self-interest,” Dubin, a UDM Law professor, said.

“So it’s a good experience for these students right from the start to see the complexity of being a lawyer and the difficulties sometimes in arriving at reasonable, ethical decision making.”
