Michigan DNR seeking volunteers for 2014 campground hosts

LANSING (AP) -- The Michigan Department of Natural Resources is seeking volunteer hosts for state parks and state forest campgrounds in 2014. Hosts handle tasks such as directing visitors to campsites, answering questions, arranging campground activities and performing light maintenance. In return, they get to camp for no charge. Individuals and "teams" such as couples and families are eligible. Candidates must be at least 18 years old, provide 30 hours of service per week and furnish their own equipment. Hosts are chosen by park and forest managers, who may require an interview or request additional information. Selection is based on the applicant's familiarity with the park or forest system, his or her camping experience and other skills. Information and applications about the host program are available from the DNR's website at www.michigan.gov/dnrvolunteers. Published: Wed, Jan 1, 2014
