Detroit man sentenced to prison in dismemberment

DETROIT (AP) -- A 73-year-old Detroit man has been sentenced to 10 to 20 years in prison in the dismemberment of a still-unidentified woman whose remains were found in his bathtub. Alphonso Jackson was sentenced Wednesday in Wayne County Circuit Court. He pleaded guilty this month to second-degree murder, concealing the death of an individual and tampering with evidence. Jackson accepted a deal to avoid a possible life sentence. Jackson told a judge the woman died of an overdose. Defense lawyer Donald Cook says Jackson provided money to the woman for drugs, panicked after she died and tried to hide the body. Jackson was arrested May 3 after police followed blood from a sidewalk to his home on Detroit's east side. Remains were found in the tub and also near a burned-out house. Published: Fri, Jan 31, 2014
