County commissioner announces visit of civil rights icon

Oakland County Commissioner Nancy L. Quarles will welcome Reverend Dr. Joseph L. Lowery, co-founder and leader of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference, on Sunday, July 20, at 7 p.m. in the Regency Manor Banquet Hall located at 25228 West 12 Mile Road in Southfield.  Lowery will be the keynote speaker at this year’s Southfield/Farmington Greater Area NAACP Dinner.

Lowery was one of the leaders of the Montgomery Bus Boycott and led the Selma to Montgomery March of 1965.

“I am excited to welcome Reverend Dr. Joseph Lowery to our area. He is a legend who was one of the leaders and architects in the Civil Rights Movement,” said Quarles.  “He worked closely with Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. in the struggle. It is only befitting that this month in which we celebrate the 50th Anniversary of the signing of the Civil Rights Bill that we have the distinct honor of welcoming him and celebrating his legacy at the Annual Southfield/Farmington NAACP Dinner. I encourage everyone to come out and be a part of this history.”
