Supreme Court justices to hear oral argument in Macomb County

As part of its “Court Community Connections” program, the Michigan Supreme Court will hear oral argument in Macomb County in People of the State of Michigan v Shawquanda Borom on Wednesday, Oct. 22, at Macomb Community College Macomb Center for the Performing Arts Auditorium in Clinton Twp.

Students from Macomb County high schools study the selected case with attorney mentors, attend oral argument, participate in debriefing session with counsel for parties, and meet Supreme Court justices during the court’s “Court Community Connections” program. This is the 15th time the court has heard oral argument outside Lansing.  To date, more than 4,000 high school students have had front-row seats to study and observe Michigan’s highest court.

Prior to oral argument, Chief Justice Robert P. Young Jr. and Justice David F. Viviano, a resident of Macomb County, will meet with government classes at Chippewa High School.

Following the case, Supreme Court General Counsel Joseph Baumann will moderate a debriefing session with attorneys who argued before the court.

The program enhances students’ awareness and understanding of Michigan’s judicial system and the importance of the rule of law.
