Statewide tornado drill planned for Thursday

LANSING (AP) - State police and emergency management officials are asking Michigan residents to participate in a statewide tornado drill this week.

The drill is planned for 2 p.m. Thursday. Businesses, organizations, schools, families and individuals are being encouraged to participate in the drill, but they are not required to do so. Nearly all state of Michigan facilities are expected to participate.

Tornadoes are common in Michigan during the late spring and early summer months. The drill comes amid the state's Severe Weather Awareness Week. Michigan says its drill is scheduled to take place at the same time as drills in at least two other Midwest states.
