County hosting Health, Fun, and Sun party

Healthy Pontiac, We Can coalition (HPWC) is hosting a family health event, Health, Fun, and Sun at Beaudette Park on Saturday, August 1st from 12 pm until 4 pm to promote use of the Clinton River Trail.

This free event is for all ages and includes fun activities such as bike tours, inflatables, children’s fitness activities, yoga sessions, giveaways, and much more. Residents are encouraged to wear comfortable shoes and bring their own bikes.

“This is the latest in Oakland County’s efforts to improve quality of life for residents by promoting healthier and more active lifestyles,” said Kathy Forzley, Oakland County Health Division manager/health officer. “We urge families in Pontiac and other communities to come enjoy the county’s many free places for physical activities such as the Clinton River Trail and local parks.”

HPWC is installing new amenities on the Clinton River Trail in August 2015, including two bike fix-it stations and bike loops that will be located in downtown Pontiac. The bike stations will include tools necessary to perform basic bike repairs and maintenance, such as changing a flat tire or adjusting brakes. These installations will encourage residents to use the recreational trail and connect them to city destinations such as the city of Pontiac library.

The coalition has worked in years past to make local places easier to find by installing road crossing signs to provide walkers and bikers with a Clinton River Trail map at entry points and nearby destinations.

OCHD, under the leadership of Oakland County Executive L. Brooks Patterson, organized the Healthy Pontiac, We Can coalition in 2011 to help the Pontiac community eat healthy, get active, and live tobacco free. It is a diverse coalition which includes leaders in primary and preventive health care, mental health, human service agencies, education, the religious community, governmental agencies, and local residents.
