Several years ago, organizers of the annual Race Judicata agreed to a “change of venue,” electing to move the popular event principally because of construction activity at the former Andover High School, which opened last week as the “new and improved” Bloomfield Hills High School.

The move to Covington Middle School in Bloomfield Hills, just a short trek from the event’s previous home, has produced “kinder and gentler” race courses for participants, eliminating some of the “very stiff hills” that spiced the routes from the old Andover site, according to officials from the Oakland County Bar Association.

The OCBA will host the 36th edition of the Race Judicata on Sunday, Sept. 20, at Covington, which is located at the corner of Quarton Road and Covington Road. The three-pronged event will feature 5-kilometer and 10-km runs, along with a 5-km walk.

“The 10-km run begins at 9:15 a.m., and the 5-km run/walk will begin at 9:30 at Covington Middle School,” said Kristen Dimich, director of Communications for the OCBA. “Registration and T-shirt pick up will begin at 8 a.m. You can run as an individual or on a team, or bring the family out for the 5-km walk.”

Construction along Covington Road has forced organizers to modify the race courses “a little bit,” according to Dimich, shifting the routes slightly through the adjoining neighborhoods.

Organizers are encouraging area law firms to enter three-runner teams in the 5-km and 10-km races. Traveling trophies will be awarded to the top team in each race.

Of course, the event is open to all comers, whether or not they know the difference between “res” and “race.” The Race Judicata, of course, is a play on words with the Latin term “res judicata,” which is short for a “matter judged.”

Registration is available online at www.ocba.org/events. Race day registration also is offered, costing $30 for runners and $20 for walkers. A portion of the proceeds will be donated to Lakeshore Legal Aid’s Counsel & Advocacy Law Line.

Dean & Fulkerson is the title sponsor of this year’s event, while supporting sponsors are Harness Dickey and Jaffe, Raitt, Heuer, & Weiss. Tim Martin, of Harness Dickey, is serving as chair of the 2015 race committee. The vice chair is Jim O’Brien from Dean & Fulkerson.
