Three months in jail for woman who stole thousands from camp

BAY CITY, Mich. (AP) - A 55-year-old woman has been sentenced to three months in jail for stealing thousands of dollars from a Bay County summer camp for children with disabilities.

Peggy Thompson says she couldn't pay her bills so she helped herself to money at Camp Fish Tales in Fraser Township. She was a secretary there.

Judge Kenneth Schmidt told Thompson that she "hurt a lot of people."

The Bay City Times says Thompson appeared in court Monday and was ordered to repay $35,000, although an audit found she had taken much more. After jail, she'll wear an electronic monitoring device for three months and perform 140 hours of community service.

Matt Rassette, who sits on the camp's board, says the embezzlement "brought the camp to the edge of financial ruin."
