Cavanaugh to run for Probate Court seat

Oakland County attorney Thomas Cavanaugh has announced that he is running for the Oakland County Probate Court seat coming vacant due to the retirement of Judge Elizabeth Pezzetti who is retiring at the end of the year due to state-mandated age limits. Cavanaugh has concentrated his practice and represented clients for more than 15 years in the areas of estate and trust planning, conservatorships and guardianships, post-mortem administration, and probate litigation. He is a frequent speaker for local and national public and professional groups.

“Having represented clients in probate matters both in and out of the courtroom over the last 15 years, I understand the lasting impacts these issues and the decisions by the court have on people and their families,” Cavanaugh said. “As a judge, I would ensure fair, impartial and just consideration was provided to all those who would come before me on the bench.”

“Thomas Cavanaugh has been the head of our firm’s Probate Practice Group for nearly 15 years. During that time, Thomas has appeared in the Oakland County Probate Court countless times on behalf of our clients and their families,” said Julius Giarmarco of Giarmarco, Mullins, and Horton PC. “His professionalism, dedication to clients, and court room successes are second to none. During my 40 years as an estate planning attorney, I have never seen anyone more qualified to be a probate court judge.”

Macomb County Probate Judge Carl Maringa endorsed Cavanaugh, saying, “Running a probate courtroom requires someone who has the ability to listen, the patience to attend to details and the compassion to help those who are oftentimes dealing with life-altering and emotional issues. Thomas Cavanaugh has the temperament, experience and proven skill to serve the families that come before the Probate Court and will make an excellent addition to the Oakland County Probate bench.”

“I served as Oakland County Probate Register. I know the duties of a probate court judge. It’s a tough job, one that Thomas Cavanaugh is singularly qualified to do. He’s proven and trusted. I can think of no better person to serve the people of Oakland County as their next probate court judge,” said Oakland County Circuit Court Judge Lisa Langton.

Cavanaugh graduated in 1995 with a Bachelor of Arts in Philosophy from Albion College. A 1998 graduate from the University of Detroit Mercy School of Law, he has authored numerous articles on estate and trust law.

He has been selected by his peers as a Michigan Super Lawyer “Rising Star” in estate and trust law, one of the “Leading Lawyers” in Trust, Will and Estate Planning Law; as one of the “Best Lawyers in America” in Trusts and Estates; and as a “Top Lawyer” by DBusiness magazine.

Cavanaugh and his wife live with their three sons in Rochester Hills. When not representing clients, Cavanaugh devotes a significant amount of his time to various community programs. Over the past 15 years, he has coached numerous youth and high school sports teams, served as a youth catechist, delivered meals to homebound individuals, and contributed to many local charities.
