Presentation to examine 'Blurred Lines' copyright infringement case ruling, May 20

The controversial lawsuit and subsequent verdict in the copyright infringement case of the song “Blurred Lines” has raised questions within the music and legal industries. It will be topic of discussion by music and copyright experts who will present a review of the judicial ruling and the impact of that ruling on the creation and performance of music.

“A Clear View of ‘Blurred Lines’” will be presented by the Midwest Chapter of the Copyright Society of the USA and the Arts, Communications, Entertainment & Sports Section of the State Bar of Michigan on Friday, May 20, from noon to 2 p.m. at the University of Detroit Mercy School of Law, 651 East Jefferson Avenue in Detroit (parking available on Larned across from the law school).

“This case in particular has the music industry discussing the legal protections granted to original works and what effect, if any,  this decision will have on  the ability to create music in the future,” said Richard Herman,  program chair of Richard A. Herman PC. “We will explore this ruling, what it means for artists and creators and how to protect themselves and their works.”

Featured guests to lead the discussion are Judith Finell, president of New York-based music consulting firm Finell Music Services Inc. who was the testifying musicologist for the Marvin Gaye estate in the case; and Tom Leavens, partner in Chicago-based Leavens, Strand, & Glover LLC and adjunct professor at Northwestern University School of Law and at the S.J. Quinney College of Law at the University of Utah who will offer his expertise and legal perspective relating to performing, visual, and literary expression, and intellectual property.

Cost is $12.50 in advance/$15 day of event; $10 in advance/$12.50 day of event for CSUSA members; $7 in advance/$9 day of event for students.  Limited registration available, light lunch included.
