Urban Drug Court conducts its first graduation

The Oakland County Circuit Court will hold its first Urban Drug Court (UDC) graduation on Wednesday, Aug. 31.  The ceremony will take place at 3 p.m. in the Board of Commissioners auditorium adjacent to the Oakland County Circuit courthouse at 1200 N. Telegraph Road in Pontiac.  Twenty-three participants have successfully completed the program and will be recognized at the graduation ceremony. A reception celebrating their accomplishments will immediately follow.

The Sixth Circuit Court UDC is a grant-funded joint collaboration between the Governor’s office and the Michigan Supreme Court. This program was supported by the legislature and established in 2013.

The Urban Drug Court is designed to work with offenders with a history of substance abuse who commit non-violent felonies within the city of Pontiac. As a requirement of probation, the participants agree to receive integrated drug treatment and rehabilitation services and frequent court reviews. Judge Phyllis McMillen, Judge Michael Warren, and Judge Daniel P. O’Brien monitor referrals on behalf of the Oakland County Circuit Court to the UDC on a rotational basis.

The treatment plans have progressive phases, with each phase lasting a few to several months to complete. Depending upon the participant’s ability to successfully complete each phase, the program may last up to two years.

With positive support from the Michigan leadership within the State Court Administrative Office, the Legislature, and the Governor’s office, funding for this program has been continued through 2018.
