Treatment Court gets outstanding results, plans graduation

Six non-violent offenders who successfully completed an intensive drug and alcohol probation program will graduate from the Specialty Treatment Court at 52-3 District Court in Rochester Hills on Wednesday, Sept. 21, at 6 p.m. The Specialty Treatment Court has been a marked success with only a three percent recidivism rate according to the State Court Administrator’s Office, Chief Judge Julie Nicholson said.

“That means 97 percent of the participants that have successfully completed our program have stayed out of the criminal justice system which shows just how effective it is,” Nicholson said. “Judge (Nancy Tolwin) Carniak and I are very proud of our team as well as the graduates who have worked so hard to achieve and maintain sobriety.”

The 52-3 District Court’s Specialty Treatment Court is a non-adversarial program designed to provide immediate treatment to non-violent offenders with substance abuse issues. It is an extremely intensive program which promotes complete abstinence through immediate rehabilitative services and intense court supervision while keeping defendants accountable for their actions. Since inception, 98 participants have successfully completed the program

Judges Nicholson and Carniak, who launched the Specialty Treatment Court in April of 2006, will host the event. Orion Township Supervisor Chris Barnett will be the keynote speaker. Friends and family members will be on hand to watch their loved ones graduate.

The court is located at 700 Barclay Circle near Auburn and Rochester roads in Rochester Hills. Other local public officials and Oakland University students (and future treatment professionals) will also attend the ceremony. Media are welcome to attend.

The 52-3 District Court serves Addison Township, Auburn Hills, Lake Orion, the Village of Leonard, Oakland Township, Orion Township, Oxford Township, the Village of Oxford, Rochester, and Rochester Hills. Three judges sit on 52-3 District Court’s bench.
