On Thursday, October 13, Farmington Hills-based Fabian, Sklar, & King PC, a law firm specializing in representing victims of fires and explosions, donated 500 10-year sealed lithium battery operated smoke alarms to the Detroit Fire Department (DFD) to help raise awareness for Fire Prevention Week, which took place Oct. 9-15. Stuart Sklar, shareholder of Fabian, Sklar, & King, made the announcement.

This is the seventh consecutive year that Fabian, Sklar, & King has supplied the DFD with these critical tools—bringing their cumulative total of smoke alarms donated to the DFD to 3,500. These smoke alarms are then distributed throughout the Detroit community and installed free of charge by members of the Detroit Fire Department. In addition to Fabian, Sklar, & King’s donation of 500 smoke alarms, Kidde, the manufacturer of the devices, has donated 100 units to the DFD—bringing the total number of smoke alarms donated to 600.

“As a firm that regularly works on fire injury and explosion cases, we have a unique understanding of just how valuable these devices are in saving lives when a fire occurs,” said Sklar. “We are proud to provide these life-saving tools year-after-year to the Detroit Fire Department and partner with them to help city residents enhance the level of safety in their homes.”

According to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), 20 percent of U.S. households have smoke alarms that aren’t working properly. To ensure smoke alarms are up-to-date, they should be replaced every 10 years, which goes hand-in-hand with the NFPA’s 2016 Fire Prevention Week theme of “Don’t Wait: Check the Date!”

To request the installation of a smoke detector, citizens can contact the Detroit Fire Department at 313-596-2900.
