Special Education Law & Advocacy Conference set for May 3 in Waterford

Attorney Peter Wright from Wrightslaw.com will speak at the Wrightslaw Special Education Law & Advocacy Conference which takes place from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday, May 3, at the Oakland County Schools Building, 2111 Pontiac Lake Rd. in Waterford.

The event, hosted by Centria Healthcare Autism Services in Novi, is for parents, attorneys, and professionals that work with children with special needs and disabilities. Parents will learn what the law says schools are required to provide (and what they’re not required to do) and what their role as partners in the process is.

Wright, who won one of the landmark special education cases in front of the Supreme Court, will discuss key laws regarding special education and what a child’s rights are under the law; and teach advocacy skills regarding how to communicate and work most effectively with schools.

An attorney based in Virginia who represents children with special educational needs, Wright struggled with learning disabilities, including dyslexia, dysgraphia and ADHD, and his determination to help children grew out of his own educational experiences.
