Scholar to speak at labor law symposium Oct. 19

John Raudabaugh, Reed Larson Professor of Labor Law at Ave Maria School of Law, will deliver the keynote address during the Bernard Gottfried Memorial Labor Law Symposium on Thursday, Oct. 19, at Wayne State University Law School.

Alumni, students and anyone interested in furthering their insight into labor law are invited to attend the symposium from 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. in the Spencer M. Partrich Auditorium at the law school, 471 W. Palmer St. in Detroit.

In addition to teaching at Ave Maria School of Law, Raudabaugh is an attorney with the National Right to Work Legal Defense Foundation.

Nominated by President George H.W. Bush, he served as a board member of the National Labor Relations Board from 1990-93. Raudabaugh earned his undergraduate degree from the University of Pennsylvania, his graduate degree from Cornell University, and his law degree from the University of Virginia.

The symposium, in its 25th year, is sponsored by Wayne Law, National Labor Relations Board Region 7 and the State Bar of Michigan Labor and Employment Law Section.

The symposium will include these sessions:

• “What’s the Gig? Defining Employment in the On-demand Economy”
• “The Future of Labor Law: Is it Curtains for Collective Bargaining?”
• “NLRB and MERC – Similarities and Distinctions – Working in Tandem to Promote Peace in Public/Private Sector Labor Relations”

The registration fee for the symposium is $100, which includes all sessions, presentation materials, breakfast, and lunch. Students, NLRB staff, and government employees can register for a reduced cost of $35. The deadline for registration is Thursday, Oct. 12. Register online at eply.com/gottfried25. Parking is available for $7.75 (credit and debit cards only) in Structure No. 1 across West Palmer Street from the law school.

Proceeds from the symposium will be used to fund future educational programs and labor law studies at Wayne Law. For more details, call the Wayne Law Dean’s Office at 313-577-6497.

Continuing Legal Education credits for Ohio and Indiana may be applied for at the conference sign-in table.

The symposium honors the labor relations vision of Bernard Gottfried (1925-92), who was director of Region 7 from 1973 until his death. He taught as an adjunct professor at Wayne Law for many years.
