Team makes it to the regional finals at the ABA Region Six Negotiation Competition

Western Michigan University Cooley Law School’s Negotiation Competition team finished second during the American Bar Association’s region six negotiation competition at WMU-Cooley’s Auburn Hills campus, Nov. 3-4. WMU-Cooley students Alison Brajdich and Mayrel Narvaez from the Auburn Hills campus, and Evelyn Edwards and Mike Mbanza from the Lansing campus earned positions on the law school’s teams early this year.

The four teams receiving the best overall scores from the preliminary rounds advanced to the final round. WMU-Cooley’s Alison Brajadich and Mayrel Narvaez moved on to the final round.

The competition included two preliminary rounds. In each round the teams were provided a general set of facts and confidential facts specific to their assigned client. With the information, the teams were required to negotiate a resolution to a presented problem. The topic for this year's negotiation competition was National Security Law.

During the final round, WMU-Cooley faced off against the team from Michigan State University College of Law, while the Ohio State University-Moritz College of Law went up against a second team from Michigan State University College of Law. Michigan State University College of Law finished came in first and WMU-Cooley placed as the runner-up.

Other schools participating in the competition included John Marshall Law School, Loyola University Chicago School of Law, Ohio Northern University-Claude W. Pettit College of Law, University of Cincinnati College of Law and University of Illinois College of Law.

WMU-Cooley’s negotiation team of Alison Brajadich and Mayrel Narvaez was coached by Adjunct Professor Peter Mancini, and the team of Evelyn Edwards and Mike Mbanza was coached by Adjunct Professor Dan Stauffer.
