Advocate for restaurant workers to deliver keynote speech at event

Saru Jayaraman, a noted advocate for restaurant workers, will be keynote speaker at the 2018 annual dinner of the Michigan Coalition for Human Rights.

The group’s 38th dinner will be held on Sunday, March 18, at Marygrove College, 8425 W. McNichols in Detroit. A reception will take place at 4 p.m. with dinner and presentations beginning at 5 p.m.

Jayaraman is co-founder and co-director of the Restaurant Opportunities Center United (ROC United) and director of the Food Labor Research Center at the University of California-Berkeley. She is an attorney and longtime advocate for higher wages and better working conditions for restaurant workers.

ROC United was originally established to help restaurant workers affected by 9/11 and the World Trade Center tragedy. ROC United evolved to become an organizing and training center for all immigrant workers in New York. Currently, the group has more than 25,000 restaurant employee members in 15 states and 300 restaurant owner members.

At the dinner, Michigan Coalition for Human Rights also will honor the following local human rights leaders and organization with three activist awards: Rev. Ed Rowe will receive the group’s Lifetime Activist Award; Charles and Sandra Simmons of Hush House will be presented with the Community Activist Award; and Allied Media Project will receive the Media Activist Award.

Single tickets for the dinner are $75 (until Feb. 26) and $100 after. Tables for eight are $500 (until Feb. 26) and $700 after. Individual, corporate and organizational sponsorships also are available starting at $250.
