Resident sought to serve on senior council

Oakland County Commissioner-Elect Kristen Nelson (D-Waterford) is seeking applications from residents of the 5th County Commission District to serve on the Oakland County Senior Advisory Council after the current term ends on December 31, 2018.

“It is extremely important that our growing senior population in Oakland County has access to the resources, services and support needed to live independently and thrive,” said Nelson. “I am excited to announce this opportunity to the residents of my district and I encourage anyone with an interest or expertise in senior issues to apply. This is a chance to bring fresh ideas, give back to the community and actively participate in your local government.”

Residents interested in applying for the 2019-2020 term on the Senior Advisory Council can do so beginning January 1, 2019 by going to www.oakgov.com/boc and navigating to “Committees & Authorities” and then “Ad Hoc Committees.” A link to the application form is available under the “Senior Advisory Council” section. For additional information about the Senior Advisory Council or assistance with the application process, contact Patricia Zawadzki at 248-941-5870 or zawadzkip@oakgov.com.

The purpose of the Senior Advisory Council is to gather, evaluate and report on information about senior issues and concerns in the community. The Council informs the County Executive on the needs and services required by seniors in Oakland County and points out gaps in the elderly network. It meets monthly from September through May and holds no meetings in December. Council meetings typically take place on the third Monday of the month, with occasional exceptions for holidays or other scheduling conflicts. A representative is appointed by the commissioner from each of the 21 County Commission Districts. Four county-wide appointments are also made by the county executive.

Nelson is a Democrat who will represent District 5, which includes the cities of Keego Harbor, Orchard Lake Village, and Sylvan Lake, as well as portions of the townships of Waterford and West Bloomfield. She will be officially sworn in on January 9, 2019 at the first full board meeting of the new term. Additional information about the Board of Commissioners is available at www.oakgov.com/boc or by calling 248-858-0100.
