City of Southfield appoints new police chief

SOUTHFIELD (AP) — Deputy Detroit police chief Elvin Barren has been named police chief for suburban Southfield.

Southfield’s City Council approved Barren’s appointment Monday. Barren was hired following a national search. He starts in his new job on July 29.

Barren has spent 21 years with the Detroit Police Department where he oversaw day-to-day operations of four precincts, the Tactical Response Unit, Special Response Team, bomb squad and other units. He also is a Navy veteran.

He has a bachelor’s degree in public administration and is completing his master’s degree in criminal justice.

Mayor Ken Siver said the appointment “reflects the city’s utmost commitment to the safety and security of Southfield residents, businesses and all those who enter the city on a daily basis.”
