Legal Aid and Defender receives grant from OCBF

Legal Aid and Defender Association Inc. is pleased to announce it has received a renewal grant from the Oakland County Bar Foundation to continue the successful operation the Free Legal Information Help Desk at the Adams-Pratt Law and Research Library.

This Help Desk began operating in 2009 on the first floor of the Oakland County Circuit Court. In 2016, with the support of the Oakland County Bar Foundation, it was relocated to its current location in order to provide greater access to visitors to the Oakland County Circuit Court.  LAD staff provide on-site legal information and assistance to those who qualify for services through the project.

The funding provided by the Oakland County Bar Foundation has also enabled Legal Aid and Defender Association to provide services on-site to Arabic, Chaldean, and Spanish speaking individuals by attorneys who speak these languages in addition to serving the English-speaking community.  The support of the grant helps ensure that individuals have greater access to legal information and justice in their legal matters.

This Help Desk also provides an additional access point for these individuals who may qualify for Legal Aid and Defender Association’s services.

With the assistance of the Oakland County Bar Foundation Grant, Legal Aid and Defender Association provides two outreaches per month at the Adams-Pratt Law and Research Library. Legal Aid and Defender Association also utilizes Language Line, a service that provides interpretation services in more than 150 languages, to help ensure that language does not pose a barrier to Help Desk visitors.

Legal Aid and Defender Association’s mission is to provide holistic, innovative legal services that improve the quality of life and empower vulnerable and underserved individuals, families, and communities.  The organization’s goal is to use a variety of legal strategies that help them work with their clients in a comprehensive manner to: (1) solve their legal problems and improve their lives and circumstances; (2) solve broader systemic problems of the community; and (3) help families stay together.
