Commissioner and partners to host Friendship Games during Welcoming Week, Sept. 13-22

Last week, the Oakland County Board of Commissioners’ Legislative Affairs and Government Operations Committee passed a resolution declaring September 13-22, 2019 as Welcoming Week in Oakland County. The resolution also allocates funding for the Friendship Games, a free soccer event for adults and children of all ages. The resolution, which was initiated by Commissioner William Miller (D-Farmington), must be voted on by the full Board at their meeting today.

Welcoming Week is an annual celebration that brings together immigrants, refugees, and long-time residents in a spirit of unity. The Friendship Games will be one of hundreds of local events held across the country during Welcoming Week. The Friendship Games will take place on Saturday, Sept. 14, from 2 to 4 p.m. at Harrison High School, which is located at 29995 12 Mile Road in Farmington Hills. Individuals interested in participating will be assigned a team on the day of the event. Registration is not required. Light refreshments will be available.

“I am honored to be part of the first ever Welcoming Weekend/Friendship Games in Oakland County,” said Miller. “I truly believe we are all created equal, we just have different walks of life.”

Other event sponsors include Welcoming Michigan, Samaritas, the Chaldean Community Foundation, the Arab American and Chaldean Council, Oakland Intermediate School District, the Oakland County Football Club, and United Community Family Services.

“These events are part of a powerful and growing movement in our country and around the world demonstrating that communities want to be welcoming,” said Executive Director of Welcoming America Rachel Peric. “At a time of rising anti-immigrant rhetoric and policies that hurt families, Welcoming Week is a reminder of the resilient and inclusive spirit of American communities. Instead of casting blame, thousands of local leaders in communities large and small, rural and urban, are bringing their communities together to bridge divides and build stronger local economies where everyone belongs.”

Miller represents District 14, which includes the City of Farmington, Southfield Township, the villages of Beverly Hills, Bingham Farms and Franklin, and a portion of the City of Farmington Hills. He can be contacted at
