Board to host free screening of film for Women's Suffrage centennial

The Oakland County Board of Commissioners' Celebration of Women's Suffrage Ad Hoc Committee, in partnership with the League of Women Voters Oakland Area, is hosting a free screening of the film "Iron Jawed Angels" on Monday, Oct. 14, at 6:30 p.m. at Emagine Royal Oak Theatre, located at 200 N. Main Street in Royal Oak. "We're excited to collaborate with League of Women Voters Oakland Area, an organization that is focused on motivating our residents to vote, for this free film screening," said Board Vice Chairwoman Marcia Gershenson (D-Bloomfield Township). "This is an opportunity for people to reflect on this momentous time in our history and to learn more about the struggle women endured for the right to vote." "We need to remember past struggles to advance freedom and equality in America, to teach us how to fight for equality for all," said Board Chairman David T. Woodward (D-Royal Oak). "This community event is a fitting tribute to the suffragists who gave our nation the 19th Amendment." "Iron Jawed Angels" (2004) is a film about the American women's suffrage movement during the 1910s. The film follows political activists Alice Paul (Hilary Swank) and Lucy Burns (Frances O'Connor) as they use peaceful and effective strategies to revolutionize the American feminist movement. The free film screening is part of the committee's yearlong calendar of events and programming to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the passage of the 19th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, which guaranteed women the right to vote. Every ticket will include a soft drink and popcorn. Parking is available in front of and in the structure adjacent to the theatre for a small fee. Tickets are limited to four (4) per person while supplies last. To reserve tickets, call 248-594-6602 or send an email to lwvoami@gmail.com. "We are very pleased to be partnering with the Board of Commissioners to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the ratification of the 19th Amendment," said Geri Rinschler, former president of League of Women Voters Oakland Area. Gershenson serves as chair of the Celebration of Women's Suffrage Ad Hoc Committee, which also includes Commissioners Angela Powell (D-Pontiac) and Tom Kuhn (R-Troy).
