Holiday shoppers get extra cash as Small Business Saturday attracts record number

Three holiday shoppers split $8,000 as winners in Oakland County’s fourth annual “Small Business Saturday” shopper contest.

Oakland County Executive David Coulter distributed checks to the three lucky shoppers Tuesday at 20 Front Street in Lake Orion, one of the 349 brick and mortar businesses who registered for the contest, which offered incentives for shopping at local businesses on Nov. 30.

“Small businesses are the backbone of our economy and so important to our communities,” Coulter said. “We had a record 2,066 receipts entered this year – the most we’ve ever had – from shoppers coming into our communities and they spent more than $113,000.

Congratulations to our businesses and especially to the shoppers who found themselves with a bit of extra holiday cash.”

The winners, selected at random, were:

• Lisa O’Neill of Oxford won the top prize of $5,000, courtesy of premier sponsor ShopLoyal. She made her purchase at It’s the Little Things country store in Ortonville.

• Jody LaLonde of Clawson won the second-place prize of $2,000, courtesy of Bank of Ann Arbor. She shopped at Julian Brothers Bakery in Royal Oak.

• Martine Misuraca of Royal Oak won third place and $1,000 courtesy of Emagine theatre. She shopped at Write Impressions in Royal Oak.

Businesses who registered for the contest were eligible for a chance to win $1,000, courtesy of CEED Lending. Western Market in Ferndale was the contest’s small business winner. Lisa Paynter of It’s the Little Things country store, won $500 for waiting on the winning customer.

“We could not have done this without the help of our downtown managers, downtown development authorities, Main Street Oakland County members and our generous sponsors,” Coulter said. “The more we reach out to our partnering organizations, the more this contest will grow. That’s great for Oakland County small businesses.”
