OBITUARY: Carrie L.P. Gray

Attorney Carrie L.P. Gray passed away on Friday, July 17 at age 69.

Gray grew up in Detroit and graduated from Cass Technical High School. She earned her bachelor of science degrees in chemistry and mathematics from the Detroit Institute of Technology. She obtained a finance and marketing master of business administration degree and a juris doctorate from the University of Detroit and Detroit College of Law, respectively.

Gray was in private legal practice, specializing in corporate and technical law. From 1970-92, she held various engineering, product development, strategic planning, marketing and legal positions with Ford Motor Co. and the former Chrysler Corp. In 2000, Gray joined American Axle & Manufacturing as director of corporate relations.

Gray was highly active in community and professional organizations. Her memberships include the State Bar of Michigan, Bethel AME Church, Board of Directors of the Automotive Hall of Fame, Boysville of Michigan, and the Wayne County Neighborhood Legal Services, also known as Neighborhood Legal Services Michigan, where she served from 1985 and was chair from 2015-20.

Gray received numerous honors and awards for her technical expertise, leadership, and community involvement including the Engineering Society of Detroit’s “Iacocca” Recognition Award, the Automotive Hall of Fame “Young Leadership & Excellence” Award, and the Spirit of Detroit Award.  Gray also was named the Detroit Metropolitan YWCA “Outstanding Woman of the Year.”

Gray is survived by her son, Chris Bass, and many other family members.
