Review of juvenile justice system offered February 18

The Oakland County Bar Association will present “Overdue for Justice: A Review of the Juvenile Justice System in Michigan” as an online webinar on Thursday, February 18, from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.

In June 2020, the National Juvenile Defender Center (NJDC) released an assessment of access to and quality of juvenile defense counsel in Michigan. “Overdue for Justice: An Assessment of Access to and Quality of Juvenile Defense Counsel in Michigan” highlights the exclusion of juvenile defense from current sweeping reforms of Michigan’s criminal defense system and raises concerns about the quality of defense counsel for children in Michigan’s delinquency system. It addresses other barriers to due process including the effects of fees and costs assessed to children and families, disparate treatment, shackling and bail provisions, and includes recommendations for actions
that state and local leaders can take to improve the quality of juvenile defense.

The OCBA Juvenile Law Committee is pleased to host the author of this report as well as other Michigan stakeholders for this panel discussion. The panelists will include Michigan Supreme Court Justice Elizabeth T. Clement, MaryAnn Scali of the National Juvenile Defender Center, Jason Smith of the Michigan Center for Youth Justice, Kristen Staley of the Michigan Indigent Defense Commission, Kim Tandy of Justice By Design, and moderator Terri T. Gilbert of the Center for Behavioral Health and Justice, Wayne State University School of Social Work.

Credit for the program has been approved with the OCBA for 1.50 Criminal credits and 1.50 Juvenile credits.

Cost is $12 for OCBA members pre-registration and $12 for non-members pre-registration. MIDC court appointed attorneys can attend for free.

The Zoom link to this seminar will be provided in a confirmation email upon registration. To register for this program, visit www.ocba.org and click on “events.”
