Man sentenced in local DUI crash that killed son, 7

MOUNT CLEMENS (AP) — A New York man has been sentenced to 29 months in prison after pleading guilty in a 2019 drunken driving crash in suburban Detroit that killed his 7-year-old son.

A Macomb County judge sentenced Arturo Molina Mendez, 33, last Thursday for the one-car crash in Clinton Township that killed Arturo Molina. He had pleaded guilty in June to driving while intoxicated causing death, The Macomb Daily reported.

Mendez, who is from upstate New York, was visiting family in suburban Detroit for the holidays when he drank at a friend's house, police said.

Police said Mendez was driving "at an excessive rate of speed" just after midnight on Dec. 8, 2019, with his son when his car struck a curb, went slightly airborne, and struck a metal utility pole.

Arturo Molina was pronounced dead at a hospital a short time later.

Mendez, who spoke through a Spanish language interpreter, said his feelings are difficult to put into words.

"I committed a crime, and I have to pay for it," Mendez said. "The pain is so great I can't even explain it. We're all working together as a family to find a positive outcome for this."
