Foundation renews grant for Legal Aid and Defender Association Help Desk

Legal Aid and Defender Association Inc. (LAD) is pleased to announce that the Oakland County Bar Foundation has renewed its grant to continue LAD’s successful operation the Free Legal Information Help Desk at the Oakland County Legal Resources Center (formerly the Oakland County Law Library). This Help Desk began operating in 2009 on the first floor of the Oakland County Circuit Court.

In 2020, in light of the pandemic, with the support of the Oakland County Bar Foundation, the clinic transitioned from a monthly clinic to a bi-monthly virtual clinic which provides greater access Oakland County residents. LAD staff provides virtual legal information and assistance to those who qualify for services through the project.

The funding provided by the Oakland County Bar Foundation has also enabled LAD to remove language as a barrier to accessing services, through both multi-lingual attorneys and interpretation services (in more than 150 languages). The support of the grant helps ensure that individuals have greater access to legal information and justice in their legal matters.

The Oakland County Bar Foundation’s grant enables LAD to provide two outreaches per month at the Legal Resources Center. LAD continues to provide advice and assistance to Legal Resources Center callers by phone while health and safety concerns related to the coronavirus pandemic require suspension of in-person clinics.

LAD’s mission is to provide holistic, innovative legal services that improve the quality of life and empower vulnerable and underserved individuals, families, and communities. The organization’s goal is to use a variety of legal strategies that help them work with their clients in a comprehensive manner to: (1) solve their legal problems and improve their lives and circumstances; (2) solve broader systemic problems of
the community; and (3) help families stay together.
