Law firm teams up to help change lives

Among those taking part in an expungement clinic held July 29 were (front row, left to right) Ronda Tate Truvillion, Karen Schumer, Kim Wade, Sharonda Mitchell, Nicole Neal Goodson (LADA), and Brent Scrutchin (DPD); along with (middle row, left to right ) Laura Sheehan, Jennifer Durden (LADA), Deborah Crossely, Aretha Glover-Bohannon, Leon Wilkerson, Heather Savitskie, Lawanna Lewis (DPD), and Carlos Dennis (DPD); and (back row, left to right) Kellie McSpadden, Hans Massaquoi, T.L. Summerville, Ngozi Nwaesei, Reginald Dozier, Melvin Lofton, and John Hall (DPD).

On  Friday, July 29, Lewis & Munday PC joined Legal Aid and Defender Association to host an expungement clinic with assistance from the Detroit Police Department. The event helped over a dozen Detroit residents begin the process of clearing their criminal records. An expunged record opens doors for individuals with previous convictions, allowing them to pursue better employment and housing options. Removing prior convictions may even allow them to be eligible to apply for student loans and continue their education.

In April 2021, the Michigan Clean Slate law was enacted, which expanded the eligibility to petition for an expungement. As a result, over two times the previous year’s number of expungement petitions were filed.
“As attorneys, we have a duty to give back to the community in a meaningful way,” said Ronda Tate Truvillion, shareholder at Lewis & Munday. “We are proud to support and provide hope to individuals looking for a second chance and seeking more opportunities to improve their lives.”
