News (AP) - Judge says monitor texts won't be given to city

DETROIT (AP) -- Text messages between then-Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick and a woman who served as federal monitor overseeing police compliance with two consent decrees won't be turned over to the city.

The Detroit News says U.S. District Judge Julian Abele Cook Jr. won't order the Justice Department to release copies of the messages.

Cook tells the city its request is premature. Detroit is considering a lawsuit against Sheryl Robinson Wood to recoup some of the $10 million it paid her and the company she represented.

Wood resigned in July 2009 after Cook said she had personal meetings and inappropriate contact with Kilpatrick, who was mayor when she was monitor.

A new monitor has been appointed.

One of the consent decrees deals with police use of force.
