News (AP) - Doctor gets 14 years in $19.7M Medicare scam

DETROIT (AP) -- A U.S. district judge has sentenced a Michigan doctor to 14 years in prison and ordered him to pay $9.4 million in restitution for defrauding the Medicare system.

Judge Sean F. Cox sentenced Dr. Jose Castro-Ramirez on Wednesday. A jury convicted him March 11 on 13 counts.

The government says Castro-Ramirez and Suresh Chand billed Medicare for physical and occupational therapy treatments that weren't provided. It says Medicare paid $9.4 million on $19.7 million in fraudulent claims.

Chand owned several businesses in Warren. He was sentenced in April to six years, nine months in prison.

Defense lawyer Thomas Slavin referred a request for comment to colleague Allen M. Wolf. The Associated Press left phone and e-mail messages for Wolf.
