Some teens may be kept off state's sex registry

LANSING (AP) -- Many teenagers cited for having consensual sex with minors would no longer be listed on Michigan's sex offender registry under legislation passed by the state Senate.

A package of bills related to the offenders' list passed unanimously Thursday and are headed to the House.

Offenders would not be listed for having consensual sex with partners who were between the ages of 13 and 16, provided the offender was not more than four years older than the victim.

The legislation calls for a petition process to allow those young offenders currently on the registry to be taken off if a court determined the sex was consensual.

The Michigan bills are in response to requirements outlined in a federal statute.
