The Washtenaw County Bar Association teamed with the Eastern Michigan University Legal Resource Center on Sept. 17 to celebrate the LRC’s 10th anniversary and also to celebrate Lori Buiteweg as the new president of the State Bar of Michigan, the first from Washtenaw County in many years.
Buiteweg, of Nichols, Sacks, Slank, Sendelbach & Buiteweg, P.C. in Ann Arbor, was instrumental in the founding of the LRC in 2005. The LRC is a one-of-a-kind center for self-represented litigants, staffed by EMU paralegals in training, and is located on the first floor of the Washtenaw County Courthouse in downtown Ann Arbor.
Buiteweg was honored for her many years of service to the Legal Resource Center, as were supervising attorneys Robin Dec and Tracy Nothnagel.
The joint milestone celebration, held at the Corner Brewery in Ypsilanti, also served as a fundraiser in equal parts for the LRC, the LRC’s Alice Callum Paralegal Scholarship Fund and the WCBA’s Law and Justice Fund.
