Legal Aid and Defender Association, Inc. (LAD) is providing legal services to the city’s Brightmoor neighborhood as a partner in the Brightmoor Health Outreach Collaborative (BHOC).

Brightmoor is a four-square-mile area in northwest Detroit created in the early 1920s as a planned community of inexpensive housing for migrants, most of whom worked in the automobile industry.  Once a thriving working-class neighborhood, it is now one of the city’s poorest.

Led by Beaumont Health System (BHS), the BHOC was recently launched at the City Covenant Church and Mission, 13624 Stout St., in cooperation with the Brightmoor Alliance (http://www.brightmooralliance.org) to provide medical, dental and legal services to the neighborhood.

The $268,000 project is supported by a three-year grant from the Jewish Fund and corporate donations from Comerica Charitable Foundation.

Other partners in BHOC are Covenant Community Care, a Detroit-based health care provider, and student volunteers from Oakland University William Beaumont School of Medicine and Thomas M. Cooley Law School.

BHS doctors and nurses are providing adult and pediatric medical care and screenings.  LAD staff attorneys are providing legal services with the help of the Cooley students and pro bono attorneys from the private bar.

BHS partnered with LAD to create the Legal Aid for Children and Families program at Beaumont Children’s Hospital in 2009.  The free legal assistance program is designed to improve the health and welfare of low-income children and their families by addressing the underlying causes of poor health among children.

LAD is providing legal services through the BHOC as part of its broad based advocacy program.

“We welcome this opportunity to expand our partnership with Beaumont and the other participants to help the Brightmoor community,” LAD President and CEO Deierdre L. Weir said.
