Members of the DFD will take Fabian, Sklar, & King’s generous donation and personally distribute the alarms to members of the Detroit community and install them in homes free of charge.
Inspired by Fabian, Sklar, & King’s noted generosity and yearly commitment to this initiative, Kidde, the Mebane, N.C.-based manufacturer of the alarms, committed to donating an additional 100 alarms—bringing the total number of units to be donated to the DFD this year to 600. Thanks to Fabian, Sklar, & King’s donations since 2009 through this initiative, thousands of Detroit residents have been able to obtain these life-saving tools and have them installed in their homes by a firefighter at no cost.
“As attorneys specializing in fire injury, explosion and property damage cases, we have witnessed first hand the devastating impact that fires and explosions can have on individuals and families,” said Sklar. “We are passionate about fire prevention and are proud to partner with the DFD again for this important initiative. Smoke alarms are a critical safety component that every household should have to help save lives, and we hope that members of the Detroit community will take advantage of this campaign and have a smoke alarm installed in their home—which could be the difference between life and death if a fire occurs.”
For more than 25 years, the lawyers at Fabian, Sklar, & King have been dedicated to advocating and protecting the rights of those injured or killed as a result of fires or explosions. The firm has successfully handled thousands of property damage claims ranging from propane and natural gas explosions, to multimillion-dollar commercial fire claims for Fortune 500 companies.
A committed member of the local community, last year, the firm was actively involved in helping 15 DFD arson investigators become Certified Fire and Explosion Investigators (CFEI) through the National Association of Fire Investigators (NAFI). Notably, Fabian, Sklar, & King initiated and organized a three day, 20 hour training program whereby 15 DFD Arson Section investigators received training from leading fire investigation professionals and educators from around the country. Following the training, the investigators took and passed the Certified Fire and Explosion Investigator (CFEI) exam, resulting in the most CFEI’s in the history of the fire department. Fabian, Sklar, & King covered all costs associated with the training, which would have cost the DFD over $20,000 to provide.
Both Sklar and Michael Fabian, founding shareholder of the firm, were recently selected for inclusion in The Best Lawyers in America 2014. Fabian was also recognized as Best Lawyers’ 2014 Detroit Insurance Law “Lawyer of the Year,” where he received the highest average of votes in the specialty area of Insurance Law in Metro Detroit.
