Detroit orchestra grant boosts bedside manner

DETROIT (AP) — The Detroit Symphony Orchestra is using a grant to get off the concert stage — and into a hospital for children.

The ensemble recently announced that it’s one of 23 U.S. orchestras to receive grants from the League of American Orchestras for education and community investment. The Detroit organization is using $17,500 to develop its health and wellness program at Children’s Hospital of Michigan in the city.

The DSO’s involvement with the hospital includes lobby concerts, music therapy sessions and other events simulcast into patients’ rooms.

Orchestra President and Chief Executive Anne Parsons says the support enables the organization to “inspire communities ... beyond the traditional setting of the concert hall.”

The grants are part of a three-year, $1.5 million program supported by the Ann and Gordon Getty Foundation.
