Bertolini honored as one of magazine's Public Officials of the Year for 2017

Deputy Oakland County Executive/ CIO Phil Bertolini is one of GOVERNING’s Public Officials of the Year for 2017, the magazine announced today. GOVERNING selects a handful of officials each year as the most outstanding leaders in state and local government who exemplify the ideals of public service.

“Phil is among those in my administration who drive innovation, not just in technology but in the way we do business and serve our customers,” said County Executive L. Brooks Patterson, who was among GOVERNING’s Public Officials of the Year in 2013. “This award and many others Phil has earned are a result of his exceptional leadership and commitment to Oakland County.”

Bertolini joins other notable recipients this year such as Virginia Gov. Terry McAuliffe, Phoenix Mayor Greg Stanton, and Kansas Senate Majority Leader Jim Denning and House Minority Leader Jim Ward. (To read the GOVERNING article, visit http://ow.ly/6toK30gzLVP.)

“I’m going to borrow a line from Brooks Patterson: I get to take a bow for the hard work of many employees who are committed to making Oakland County the best managed county in the United States,” Bertolini said. “Even then, we are responding to Brooks Patterson’s vision of excellence in government.”

Previous honors for Bertolini include:

• CIO magazine Hall of Fame Class of 2017.

• Michigan Digital Government Summit’s IT Leader of the Year for 2016.

• Crain’s Detroit Business CIO of the Year for 2013.

• White House Champion of Change in 2012.

• “Top 25, Doers, Dreamers and Drivers” by Government Technology Magazine in 2007 with County Executive Patterson.

• CIO of the Year in 2004 from Automation Alley.

Bertolini has served as deputy county executive and CIO since January of 2005. He earned his Bachelor of Arts degree in telecommunication from Michigan State University in 1985. He joined the county in 1988, rising to director of IT in 2001. His personal mission statement says that he wants “to provide innovative practical leadership that empowers the team to responsibly deliver the highest quality technology services that afford maximum benefit to the organization.”
