Volunteers to help Detroit-area nonprofits on Christmas Day

BLOOMFIELD HILLS (AP) — Nearly 1,000 volunteers are expected to visit about 40 Detroit-area nonprofit organizations as part of the 22nd annual Mitzvah Day.

The Bloomfield Hills-based Jewish Community Relations Council/AJC says they will work shifts starting early on Christmas Day that will include delivering meals and toys, cleaning out storage closets and visiting the elderly.

Nonprofits needing help include the Detroit Rescue Mission, Mariners Inn, Cass Community Social Services, Michigan Humane Society, Jewish Community Center and Sanctum House. Volunteers are encouraged to pre-register.

The Jewish Community Relations Council/AJC says it’s the single largest day of volunteering by Detroit’s Jewish community and was started to fill staff shortages or allow organizations to reduce staffing on Christmas.

The Jewish Federation of Metropolitan Detroit partners in the daylong event. The Michigan Muslim Community Council also participates.
