Board, sheriff kick-off gun lock giveaway campaign

In honor of National Safety Month in June, the Oakland County Board of Commissioners (BOC) is again partnering with the Oakland County Sheriff’s Office (OCSO) to provide free gun locks to residents. This annual program promotes safe and responsible gun ownership by distributing free gun locks to the public via local police departments. The National Shooting Sports Foundation (NSSF) provides the locks at no cost to taxpayers. The BOC and OCSO have worked together on this important public safety initiative for the past six years and have distributed thousands of gun locks.

“We can do better when it comes to gun safety,” said Board Chairman David T. Woodward. “This is about saving lives. We must be proactive and get serious about responsible gun ownership to make our communities safer.”

“We encourage citizens to use gun safety devices, whether it is a trigger lock, lock box, or gun safe when storing a firearm,” said Sheriff Michael J. Bouchard. “Properly securing weapons is critical in helping to prevent accidental shootings and theft.”

Members of the public can go to participating local law enforcement agencies to obtain a free gun lock while supplies last. For additional information, visit www.oakgov.com/gunsafety.

Last year, in addition to the gun lock giveaway, the BOC and OSCO partnered with the Health Division and Oakland Schools to address the tragic and pressing issue of violence in schools. Unfortunately, this remains a serious and ongoing problem nationwide. They collaborated to create a school safety resource webpage for Oakland County residents. It can be found at www.oakgov.com/schoolsafety and includes information about active shooter preparedness, youth suicide prevention, dating violence prevention, cyberbullying and more.

“Violence can have lasting effects on the health of a community,” said Leigh-Anne Stafford, health officer for the Oakland County Health Division. “It’s important that we do everything we can to prevent gun violence and promote the safety and well-being of everyone who lives, works, and plays in Oakland County.”
