Justice Sotomayor to speak at ABA Equity Summit

A conversation with U.S. Supreme Court Associate Justice Sonia Sotomayor will be the highlight of a four-day “Equity Summit: Advancing Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion in the Legal Profession and Beyond,” to be virtually held September 27-30. The event will be hosted by the American Bar Association Diversity and Inclusion Center and Diversity and Inclusion Advisory Council.

The Sotomayor fireside chat will be held virtually on Wednesday, September 29, from 1 to 2 p.m. and will be moderated by Jaime “Jim” Taronji, attorney at the Federal Trade Commission. ABA President Reginald M. Turner will offer welcome remarks.

The inaugural Equity Summit will feature 4½ hours of programming each day — including five CLEs, four TED-style talks and three workshops — designed to educate attendees on best practices and facilitate a robust exchange of insights, concepts and strategies on key diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) topics, such as:

  • Interrupting implicit bias
  • Impact of COVID-19 on DEI in the legal profession
  • DEI and ethics
  • Recruiting/retaining lawyers from diverse backgrounds
  • Creating an inclusive workplace and practice
  • Leveraging your personal brand to build DEI and leadership

The Equity Summit will also include a virtual tour of the National Civil Rights Museum in Memphis, Tennessee.

Cost for the event is $69 for ABA members, $99 for non-members—with further discounted rates for government/public interest attorneys and law students.  To register, visit www.americanbar.org/groups/diversity.
